When you make contact with me either by phone, email, or the online form I will offer you a free 15-minute phone consultation. This allows both of us the opportunity to have a brief chat to see what you are looking for help with and to ensure we are both a good match for each other. During this conversation you have the chance to ask me any questions that you might want answers to. There is no obligation at this point for you to book in for a session however, if you do decide to make a booking, we will pick a day and time that is suitable for us both.

Generally, you will meet for therapy regularly for about 45-50 minutes usually at the same time once each week.
The time is adjusted for children and adolescents depending on their age and ability to interact, this can be between 30-45 minutes
The goal of counselling is to learn about our habits and patterns of feeling and behaviour and how they cause us problems. We can then learn new habits and patterns which will be more successful for us. Counselling provides a special setting in which we can learn about ourselves enabling us to be more effective in our relationships with others and with ourselves.
During our first meeting I will explain my contract and confidentiality and ask you to agree to the terms and sign a form. I will then ask you a few questions in order to gain an understanding of what might be going on in your life and we will discuss your expectations of counselling and what you would like to gain from the experience.
This element gives me an insight into what has brought you to seek counselling and we will compile a working agreement regarding the terms and conditions of engaging in counselling and psychotherapy together. For effective counselling and psychotherapy it is important that you attend consistently for your weekly appointment. Frequent cancellations and/or late arrivalswill be addressed.

Confidentiality

I provide a consistent, safe, and private space where I hope you will feel able to talk
about whatever is on your mind. To do this all personal information is treated in the
strictest confidence. I believe that confidentiality and understanding the limitations of
confidentiality is an essential prerequisite to effective professional and ethical counselling and psychotherapy.
I am also bound by the BACP and APCP Code of Ethics and Practice for
Counsellors, Psychotherapists and Supervisors which includes the Limits of
Confidentiality. At the first meeting I will clearly explain about the rare occasions
when confidentiality might be broken with or without your consent. If at any stage you
are unclear or do not understand these limitations I will be happy to explain them further.
